Same view, different media.

The Design Projects task for the holidays:

- Pick a view

- Do a 2 minute sketch of that view not using pencils

- Repeat but change the drawing equipment

- Try and use some unconventional drawing materials.

So I live in the countryside and so am blessed with views so I picked the view from my driveway to my field. See photo below. I especially love the old railway bridge you can see in the distance framed my by apple trees.

First 2 sketches. 2 minutes each. An old red scratchy uni-ball pen and a green chalk board pen. The pen definitely not my finest sketch but it was rushed and avoided smudging the ink. Chalk pens are terrible on paper. But not a terrible interpretation for 2 minutes.

3rd and 4th sketches. Brown felt tip pen in 2 minutes and gold and silver marker pens. About 2 minutes per colour. Glistens in the light.

A4 charcoal sketch next. I quite enjoy this media as I’m definitely a smudger!

For the 6th 7th and 8th I looked for unusual ways to make a mark. Drawing 6 was using and old EPNS spoon covered in tarnish. The Silver Oxide tarnish sticks to the paper quite nicely but the spoon is no the most accurate mark maker. A Terry’s Chocolate orange wedge has a good point for mark making the the chocolate left behind is faint.

In my head Pritt stick then glitter would produce a very interesting sketch. Only issues being 1. I don’t own glitter. And 2. Pritt stick is invisible. To solve problem 1 as a natural alternative I blended Beech and Hornbeam leaves to make a dust. And with 2 I had to rely on the reflection of the adhesive. Ignoring leaf blending time and leaf sticking time I only sketched with the adhesive for 2 minutes. Disappointed with the result however.

Number 9 was from memory, walking my dog in the field. Sand had washed out of the soil down in the bottom of the field and this sketch was etched on said sand by a fallen twig.

Time for some colour with 10 and 11. Soft and Oil pastels. I broke the time limit both times as I used multiple colours but still quite speedy attempts.

12 done using old gel pens. I spent far longer trying to find colours which still worked hence the funky fluorescence.

Finally I sketched the view using uni-pin fine line pens sizes ranging from 0.1 to 0.8 mm. I went for speedy sketches with this but I wanted it to be good so I put a time limit of 4 mins per pen. Total of 20 minutes. I’m quite happy with the resemblance.
